These are simple mitti ke diye, the plain brown clay lamps that go on the balcony wall at Diwali. They are shaped from clay, left to dry and then baked so they are hard and hold oil.

We have kept them unpainted. Some families like to decorate their diyas with colours and mirror work before the festival, and a plain diya is easy to paint at home with the kids.

Before you light them

Soak the diyas in water for a few hours, or overnight, and let them dry. Old folks at home will tell you the same thing. A soaked diya soaks up less oil, so the flame burns for longer and your oil lasts through the evening.

Using them

  • Fill with ghee or til oil, and use a cotton wick, round (gol batti) or long (lambi batti) as you prefer.
  • Place them on a plate, a rangoli or a steel thali, not directly on painted wood.
  • Use them for Diwali, Dev Deepawali, Kartik month, Tulsi puja, and the daily sandhya diya.

Good to know

  • Each diya is made by hand, so shapes and colour will differ slightly. A small uneven edge is normal.
  • Clay can crack if it falls, so unpack them on a table, not on the floor.
  • After the festival, wipe off leftover oil and keep them in a dry box for next year.
  • For Diwali, when you light rows of diyas, the pack of 2 is usually the better buy.
